TL ihmetteli hiljattain NYTimesin Gail Collinsin vihjailua sotatoimista Suomea vastaan. Suomalaisten haukkumisesta on ilmeisesti tullut Timesin kolumnistien keskuudessa trendikästä. Tällä kertaa asialla on Collinsin kollega David Brooks, joka kertoo kuinka pressanvaaleista kirjoittaminen muuttuu kun siirrytään esivaaleista itse vaaleihin:

Gail, Do you want to know the turning point of every election year? It’s the dreaded descent of the Finns. You’ll be riding around in Iowa with a candidate, chatting casually and learning a lot about what makes the person tick. Then suddenly the press person sitting in the back of the van will mention that a journalist from Finland will be joining us on the next leg. Pretty soon, there will be another reporter from Japan. Then six from Korea. Then 50 from the BBC. (Who pays all those people?) Before long any sense of intimacy, and hint of reality, is gone. The campaign is a traveling stupidity show. [...] In other words, I love covering campaigns before Iowa, but have serious doubts about democracy the closer we get to the general election.
