Demand orientation and user orientation are established concepts, but are both challenged in practice by the presence of unaroused, unarticulated, and unrecognized user needs, which can only be uncovered by extensively observing and interacting with users in real-life situations. Anthropology and ethnography, not business, engineering or marketing disciplines, form the intellectual foundation for contemporary research and application. This has important implications for educational policy.
